Impact of Climate Change on Water Resources in India

A distributed hydrological model (SWAT) has been used on major river basins using HadRM2 daily weather data. The study determines the present water availability in space and time without incorporating any man made changes like dams, diversions, etc. The same framework is then used to predict the impact of climate change on the water resources with the assumption that the land use shall not change over time.

A total of 40 years of simulation over 12 river basins of the country have been conducted, 20 years belonging to control (present) and the remaining 20 years for (future) climate scenario. Each river basin has also been subdivided into reasonable sized sub basins so as to account for spatial variability of possible climate change. It has been observed that the impacts of climate change are varying across the river basins as well as sub basins. The initial analysis has revealed that under Climate change scenario conditions in terms of severity of droughts and intensity of floods in various parts of the country may deteriorate. However, there is a general reduction in the quantity of the available runoff in the Climate change scenario.

Proceedings of the NATCOM workshop on Scenarios and Future Emissions

Proceedings of the NATCOM workshop on Scenarios and Future Emissions
July 22, 2003, Ahmedabad

Proceedings contain the results of the investigations for climate and emission scenarios and future green house gas emissions. The proceedings include papers on national circumstances for a sustainable future; regional climate change scenarios; future scenarios of extreme rainfall and temperature, emission scenarios and CO2 emission projections; estimation of present and future emissions of HFCs, PFCs and SF6 from Indian industry; future methane and N2O emissions; impacts of climate change on energy, industry and infrastructure.

About NATCOM

In pursuance of the implementation of the United Nations Frame work Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), Government of India has initiated a project towards the preparation of India's Initial National Communication. This project is being executed by Ministry of Environment and Forests and is funded by the Global Environment Fund through the United Nations Development Programme, India. The elements of information are as per the Article 4 and 12 of the Convention, stipulated for Developing Country Parties. The information will include a national inventory of greenhouse gases emitted from anthropogenic sources and removal by sinks and which are not controlled by Montreal protocol; a general description of steps towards implementation of the convention and other relevant information which indicate India's commitment to sustainable development.
